Making Monster Bubbles is one of our favorite outdoor activities.  The necessary supplies are inexpensive.  You can find glycerine at your local drugstore.  Supervise children carefully (soap bubbles sting when they get in the eyes) and make sure you’re playing on a surface that can’t be damaged (avoid carpets, furniture, and grandma’s prized petunias).

You’ll need:

1/4 cup liquid dishwashing detergent (experts recommend Joy or Ultra Dawn)
3/4 cup water (soft water or distilled water)
5 drops of glycerin (available from most drug stores)

Add the ingredients to a container and mix gently.  If possible, let the mixture “rest” for a day or two.  Aged bubbles seem to work better.  For the best bubbles, look for a nice, calm day when the humidity is high.

Here’s another recipe that substitutes corn syrup in place of glycerine:

Dawn Ultra or Joy Ultra – 1 cup

Distilled Water – 15 cups

White Corn Syrup – 1/4 cup

Use your imagination for bubble wands.  One of the simplest is to thread a length of yarn (about 4-feet long) inside two drinking straws.  Hold one straw in each hand and dip your “wand” into the bubble solution.
